Online Dating: Pictures Say a Thousand Words

By Dan | Jan 28, 2009

Let’s be honest here. We already know that women are generally looking for a solid personality over a guy who looks good standing next to them. But when you’re dating online, it seems to be a whole new ballgame.

If you don’t like the way you look (say you think you’re too bald, too fat, too old, etc.), you’re finished, right?

Not necessarily.  Your picture is a crucial part of your online dating profile, but that doesn’t mean it’s totally about the body you own.  Let’s take a deeper look and see if we can accelerate your rate of success online by using better pictures.

It’s Not Your Face, It’s Your Vibe

Although it can feel a bit superficial to subject your online dating success to the quality of your pictures, remember that you have pretty direct control over what you upload to your dating profile.

Let’s be serious for a moment:  how much effort did you really put into your pictures?  Did you choose a single old picture of you eating pizza on the couch, not smiling, and generally zoning out?  It may be convenient to upload that picture quickly, but you really shouldn’t upload it at all.

Many times, it’s not about the face in your pictures, but the vibe you’re giving off.  If that all sounds vague, consider this:  why not put up a picture of you smiling?  How much more attractive is that vibe?

Don’t worry about your face if you’re not Brad Pitt.  Worry about what your face is doing:  do your pictures say you’re happy and have a positive outlook, or do they say “ladies, I’m desperate”?

There’s More to a Picture Than Just You

In your picture, there will be two things:  you, and the story the picture is telling.  What does the picture say about you?

Think about what you want to convey about yourself, and then do a deeper search for pictures in your collection that say it better.

For example:  how do you tell women you’re a popular, fun-loving guy?  By telling them?  No.  By showing them.  If you can find an old picture where you’re hugging a female friend while out and about, both of you smiling for the camera, what does that say about you?  That you’re a normal, well-adjusted, fun-loving guy.  Without you having to tell them.

To many people, visual evidence equals proof.  You can write up a good profile, but if your pictures are lacking, you won’t find as consistent a success rate.

Make sure to include pictures of you and friends (male and female) as much as possible, and also try to include pictures of you doing activities you enjoy.  Show that you have a life.

What do the “thousand words” in your pictures say about you?
